REVIEW Sarafloxacin is a fluoroquinoline antibacterial effective against Mycobacterium tuberculosis once used for prophylactic dosage in poultry and fish, as well as for normal use in human. The compound has shown multimodal mechanism of action and inhibits both DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzyme, leading to increased antibacterial spectrum via DNA gyrase-dependent processes such as DNA polymerization, (ATP-dependent) DNA supercoiling, and chromosome fragmentation. Sarafloxacin was removed from clinical use by the manufacturer (Abbott Laboratories) on April 30, 2001 due to lack of sales.
