REVIEW Beta-Ecdysone is a steroidal prohormone of the major insect molting hormone 20-hydroxyecdysone, which is secreted from the prothoracic glands. It plays a key role in insect development, cell proliferaton, growth and apoptosis by controlling gene expression involved in moulting and metamorphosis. BetaEcdysone is an Ecdysone receptor (EcR) agonist. It acts through a heterodimeric receptor comprising the ecdysone receptor (EcR) and the ultraspiracle proteins.
