REVIEW Beta-Sitosterol is one of several phytosterols related to cholesterol. It reduces blood levels of cholesterol by competing with it for absorption in the intestine and is sometimes used in treating hypercholesterolemia. Due to its structural similarity to cholesterol, when sitosterol is absorbed in the intestine, it is transported by lipoproteins and incorporated into the cellular membrane. It takes the place of dietary and biliary cholesterol in micelles produced in the intestinal lumen.
