REVIEW

Palmatine is a protoberberine isoquinoline alkaloid found in several plants including Phellodendron amurense, Rhizoma coptidis/Coptis Chinensis and Corydalis yanhusuo. Palmatine is an example of an active component of Chinese traditional medicine. It is also the major component of the protoberberine extract from Enantia chlorantha. Palmatine has been studied for its potential use in the treatment of jaundice, dysentery, hypertension, inflammation, and liver-related diseases. The compound also has weak in vitro activity against flavivirus. Palmatine also suppressed West Nile virus without detectable and could also suppress dengue virus and yellow fever virus. Palmatine has also been shown to bind to double stranded DNA and RNA and also been used as penetrating cation conjugates for drugs against various pathologies and aging as mitochondria-targeted antioxidants and selective mild uncouplers.
