REVIEW

Gabapentin-lactam is a potassium channel modulator and potential neuroprotector. A cell-permeable compound, it has been reported to reduce oxygen glucose deprivation-induced [3H]glutamate release in rat ischemia hippocampal slices. Glutamate is an excitotoxin and its inhibition can decrease the number of surviving ganglion cells in vitro. In mechanistic studies it has been demonstrated that the neuroprotective characteristics of gabapentin-lactam take effect via opening of ATP-sensitive potassium channels.
