REVIEW A first-generation antihistamine possessing anticholinergic, antitussive, antiemetic and sedative properties which is mainly used to treat allergies. Diphenhydramine is an inverse agonist of the histamine H1 receptor. By blocking histamine in the capillaries it can reduce the intensity of allergic symptoms.
