REVIEW 4-Phenylbutyrate is a salt of an aromatic fatty acid. The drug has been used to treat urea cycle disorders. Sodium phenylbutyrate metabolites allows the kidneys to excrete excess nitrogen in place of urea. Phenylbutyrate is a prodrug.
