REVIEW Flupirtine is an aminopyridine that functions as a centrally acting non-opioid analgesic, muscle relaxation and neuroprotective agent, without antipyretic or antiphlogistic properties. In particular it has seen success for the treatment of acute and chronic pain, particularly musculoskeletal pain It is unique as a non-opioid, non-NSAID, non-steroidal analgesic. Flupirtine displays indirect NDMA receptor antagonism via activation of potassium channels and is the first representative of a pharmacological class denoted the ''selective neuronal potassium channel openers''.
