REVIEW

Baicalin, the naturally occurring glucuronide of the flavone baicalein, is found in several species in the genus Scutellaria, including Scutellaria lateriflora (blue skullcap). It is a component of Chinese medicinal herb Huang-chin (Scutellaria baicalensis) and one of the chemical ingredients of Sho-Saiko-To, an herbal supplement. Baicalin has been extensively researched for utility in a number of therapeutic areas owing to its anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial, and anti-cancer properties. Baicalin is a known prolyl oligopeptidase inhibitor, induces apoptosis in pancreatic cancer cells, and affects the GABA receptors.
