REVIEW Clobetasol propionate is a corticosteroid used to treat various skin disorders including eczema and psoriasis. It is also highly effective for contact dermatitis caused by exposure to poison ivy or oak. It is a derivative of prednisolone with high glucocorticoid activity and low mineralocorticoid activity and belongs to US Class I (Europe class IV), making it one of the most potent available. It is also used to treat several auto-immune diseases including alopecia areata, vitiligo and lichen planus. Clobetasol propionate exerts antiinflammatory, immunosuppressive and antimitotic effects influencing the growth, differentiation and function of various cells and inhibiting cytokine production.
