REVIEW

Abamectin is a mixture of avermectins, 80% avermectin B1a and less than 20% avermectin B1b, with similar biological and toxicological properties. It is a natural fermentation product of Streptomyces avermitilis. Abamectin is used to control insect and mite pests of a range of agronomic, fruit, vegetable and ornamental crops, and it is used by homeowners for control of fire ants. Abamectin is also used as a veterinary anthelmintic. Able to cross insects' blood-brain barrier, abamectin interferes with neural and neuromuscular transmission by stimulating the GABA system, causing paralysis.
